Poetry from people in prison. Price £7.50
Edited by Rachel Billington with a foreword by Andrew
Motion
Inside Poetry is a collection of 213 poems by 202 prisoners
chosen from over 2,000 poems sent to Inside Time, the national
‘not for profit’ newspaper for prisoners distributed free
of charge to all UK prisons and sent to many prisoners held
overseas. Eighteen months ago the newspaper extended its
publication of poetry to a regular two page slot, which soon grew to
include 8 page quarterly supplements. It became clear that prisoners
from all backgrounds, of every educational level, were drawn to put
their feelings into poetry. Inside Time felt that the next step was a
book which would recognise our contributors’ achievements and might
also attract readers from outside the prison estate. Inside Poetry
Volume 1 is the result.
These poems are important because they give a voice to those who
are seldom heard. They paint an intimate picture of their hopes,
anguish and daily lives behind bars.
In his foreword, Andrew Motion (Poet Laureate 1999 - 2009) writes:
‘Readers will find funny poems, sad poems, introspective poems,
world-wise poems – poems, in fact, which fit and realise every
mood under the sun and moon. For all these reasons, the anthology
is a deeply enjoyable one. Its exceptional value lies in the fact that
it releases and validates the voices it contains.
’ Inside Poetry was launched at Daunt Books, 112-114 Holland
Park Avenue, London W11 4UA on Thursday 2nd July where serving
and former prisoner contributors attended. You can view the short video of the
book launch below. The book is on sale at £9.99. Copies will be donated to all UK prison libraries free
of charge and at a discount price of £7.50 direct from Inside Time. It will also
be available through all the usual high street and online channels.
